How to Spring Clean your Beauty Products

4.13.2021

It's that time of the year, time to spring clean! While you're cleaning your closets and organizing other aspects of your home, don't forget your makeup and skincare cabinets/drawers.

Each year around this time, I like to go through my makeup and skincare drawers to declutter and organise.

Here are some of the tips I use as I spring clean my beauty area:

TAKE INVENTORY

- Pull everything out of your drawers and cabinets. This is the best way to see what you have and properly go through everything.

- Toss any expired product or items you know you won't use. If you have prescriptions for acne for example, if they've expired go ahead and toss them. I also go through any opened jars that contain creams etc., to smell and check for consistency. Often creams will start to yellow, harden, or smell "off" when they are no longer any good. I also use this time to toss items that I didn't love and know I'm not going to use. All those half used samples of items, toss them!

- This is also a good time to check for items you may need to replace such as brushes that may be on their last leg.

- While I'm doing this I often find things I forgot I had. Items I purchased and forgot about or items that got pushed to the back in favour of new items. This is the perfect time to pull those products to the front and begin using again. This is definitely a great way to shop your own stash. You may not need that palette you've been eyeing because you found a similar one pushed to the back of your drawer.

CLEAN

- I don't know about you but I'm messy when I apply makeup. Powder gets everywhere...it's a mess. Although I try to clean this space often, since everything is out I like to wipe it ALL down removing all makeup residue. I disinfect the entire space as well including all makeup organizers and baskets. I also wipe down the inside of my small makeup bag I use inside of my purse.

- I also do a deep cleaning of ALL of my makeup brushes. Even the ones I don't use regularly as they've likely collected dust and still need to be cleaned. I clean sponges, disinfect tweezers, scissors...any makeup/beauty tool I use.

ORGANIZE

- Now that you've taken inventory and cleaned your space, it's time put it all back and organize it. If you need to invest in new storage this is a great time to do so. You can clearly see what your needs are because everything is out and you're keeping only what you need/want.

- I like to organize based on what I use the most so it's easily accessible. I don't reach for glittery eye palettes on a regular basis so there's no need for them to be front and center. For instance, my go - to palettes are easily reachable because I know I wear them on a daily basis. Same for lashes, I like specific ones for everyday so I store my more glam lashes further back in the drawer.

- I also use this idea for skincare products as well. I change out my moisturizer during the warmer months so I will move my heavy winter products towards the back as I know I won't reach for them.

I hope these tips help you as you start to clean your beauty area!!
